Kova

I made a short film about my alter ego.

He felt like a bucket, a bucket that takes
all the water and takes nothing out.
He felt like a leak-proof bucket..

In the film “Kova” we enter the inner world of Ayaz, a young man with a highly sensitive personality. Ayaz receives an assignment from his teacher: write a script about his own emotions. He prefers to observe rather than participate, trapped in a world of suppressed tears. The pressure to reveal his inner world fuels his fear and doubt. “Kova” is a moving and inspiring story about self-acceptance, the power of emotions and the liberating power of art. By showing Ayaz’s inner world, others can be encouraged to share their own unique perspective with the world.

The Turkish word “Kova” means both bucket and the zodiac sign Aquarius. In the context of Ayaz's character, the "bucket" represents the wall he has built around his emotions. The symbolism of this sign, combined with the double meaning of the word “Aquarius”, perfectly encapsulates Ayaz's internal struggle. He is stuck in a bucket of limited emotions, but longs to flow freely like water.

As an Aquarius, I recognize myself all too well in that struggle with emotions. The outside world often sees me as that cool type who has everything under control. But beneath that tough surface there is secretly an ocean of emotions bubbling. Because I am an Aquarius myself and also have difficulty expressing my emotions, I came up with this bucket idea. Water is an organic element and I immediately made an interpretation of emotion and my tears that I never show. The bucket itself represents my ability to hold and process these emotions. I feel like a bucket taking in all the water (my tears) and not getting anything out.

That's why I use images of water in my film because water plays a big role in Kova. By using water in a creative and symbolic way, I want to involve the viewer in Ayaz's emotional journey. The images of water add an extra layer of depth to the story and help the viewer connect with Ayaz's inner conflicts and his search for self-acceptance. Through these images I also add tension to the viewer. My goal is to make the viewer feel what Ayaz feels when he struggles with expressing his emotions.
